Leveling Up, a project led by The Educational Gaming Environments EdGE group at TERC, investigates how social digital games played outside of school can be used to support young people’s STEM learning. With Leveling Up, we ask: What games engage youth? What is the nature of the relationship between games and science learning? How is gaming related to the nature of science and even a “science identity”? Based on front-end research and prototyping, EdGE is working with Web designers Game Gurus to create games that promote problem-solving and science thinking. NewKnowledge is serving as external evaluator for Leveling Up, which is supported in part by the National Science Foundation.
