In 2015, the California Academy of Sciences launched the Environmental Literacy Initiative, a media-rich online resource to support classroom educators teach science and environmental learning, as well as science teacher professional development. In 2016, the Academy partnered with NewKnowledge to study how teachers across the US use these online resources. Through a series of focus groups, a national survey, and a usability study with educators, NewKnowledge identified unique ways educators approach online science education resources. The study assisted the Academy with decision making for future resource development, as well as website architecture. This collaboration with the California Academy of Sciences inspired us to ask, What motivates STEM educators? How can we help them strengthen their practice?
